Tortuga 33'

This newly build boat for sale is a 33' traditional cutter. It is not built by Andersen Yacht but has an original hull/deck and has a special interior finishing with steined/waxed wood and many extras.

The Tortuga was designed by Harwood S. Ives for the Hansa Yacht und Schiffsbau GmbH. The general aim was clear: to produce a small, fast ship that can go anywhere safely, with a striking beauty, for the aesthetic character of the ship is as important as its practical qualities.

The architect was given certain
goals and parameters:

  • Give the ship weatherly and downwind ability for safe, fast passagemaking with a light easy helm under all conditions, both under power and sail, with an oversized rudder, generous lateral plane and powerful sections.

  • Give her sections similar to those developed by designer Dick Carter proven in competition in the North Sea and English channel ... designs famous for their easy motion at sea without the snap recovery from a roll so typical of many I.O.R. designs in a seaway.

  • Give her an entry forward that will not pound allowing passages to weather against steep seas.

  • Give her very high ultimate ability with reserve buoyancy (to her designed waterline) sufficient to accommodate the thousands of pounds of cruising gear that accumulates on an offshore ship.

  • Utilize every inch of interior space with a main salon nearly equivalent to our large designs with generous live-aboard for a couple with children or two couples offshore. Allow far air conditioning, generator and custom optional navigational equipment common to contemporary designs on much larger displacements.

Further comments:

"That boat is a Tortuga 33' Traditional, new - original layout - but a bit customized to my requirements, with Thailand registration.

The boat is new, has never been in the water, and is completed at 90%. It will take a 45 days of work to launch the boat, most for electrical/electronic installation, rig the mast and install the rudder.

All interior is built out of solid teak wood and rosewood. Fridge 12V installed; waste water tank, engine 54 Hp 4 cilinders diesel, gimballing stove, antiosmosis with epoxy resin, bilge finished with gel-coat, all structure-lumber saturated with epoxy resin; etc.

The boat is prepared to be single handled; 6 winches, alum. mast 2 spreaders, roller furling. On the rig the boat is very modern and different from the 33' T. as was built.

I invested a small fortune on that boat and a long time building; I just went for the very best of everything: 10 bronze portholes; rosewood 40 years old to build the ladder and the gunwales,etc.

The boat will be delivered in about 1 1/2 months from the contract, ready to go.
Completed with ship to shore radio, CD player, compasses, GPS, Sounder, Autopilot, a dinghy w/ outboard (new), cradles and:

  • salt water pump Jabsco 1"; bronze strainer; Racor fuel filter;

  • Vetus macerator pump with Y valve to holding tank; this one built out of fiber/epoxy/gelcoat/ bronze topper for easy cleaning;

  • all electric wiring running into pvc pipes and numbered: can change every wire without open the ceiling;

  • stanchions/pulpit etc. from st. steel 304 welded by TIG with 316L;

  • I give together a 2.30 Lodestar inflatable with an outboard 2hp new (Yamaha);

  • 2 winches Harken, 2 Lewmar 32, and 2 bronze on the mast for halyard/reef (for st. steel cables);

  • 6 new fenders and mooring ropes;

  • 100 spare rope - Marlowe 10 mm;

  • 3 blade bronze propeller;

  • 2 zinc anodes and 2 spare;

  • the deck is painted with Awl Grip, more lasting of gel coat to direct sun;

  • 160 lt fridge, insulated by 4" foam everyside;

  • up the water line the boat has been foam insulated;

  • all bilge epoxy painted and gel coat finished;

  • 2 Jabsco bilge pumps (very big size) and 1 hand pump;

  • inside of drawers and closets completely covered with teak wood;

  • the price includes the transport and launch of the boat with Travelift 35Ton;

  • 4 life jackets;

  • Mitsubishi 1000W portable generator (useful on the beach or to charge batteries in case of emergency);

During the final phase of construction the customer could accommodate in one of my studios free of charge (nice residence with pool etc.);

The floor on the boat is built out of 1/2 inch teak 45mm wide with insert of white wood (it is a local wood not far from Oregon Pine ) 5 mm wide. We use a light filler to straighten the fiberglass of the hull, in way to glue the teak floor directly there; avoiding plies that give always troubles with humidity. That way we reach an excellent high of the all cabin, just a little bit under the 2 mt!
By the way, the teak is glue using 3M 5200. Finished with non-slip wax. Of course the floor follows the shape of the boat and it is usually a problem only at the harbour that anywhere else the floor is never level!

The main room, and all boat actually, is exceptionally roomy: much more then most of 38' and even 40' from southern France yards, for example. The master bedroom is really perfectly to sleep in two persons - even if the love is gone already! The main sofa is over 2 mt as well, and 1.90 is the guest bedroom.
This boat is perfect and comfortable for 3 persons and 2 babies or 4 persons. The galley is so roomy (gimballing stove) with 3 big drawers and 4 place to storage + 140 lt. fridge. There is a small safety box under the table. In the middle of the living table as well, there is an antique compass from a US Navy submarine from Vietnam times (don't ask me how I've got it)."
